August 2021
Shoreline Music Monthly returns (!) with Episode 71, featuring the songs of Bonnie Jacobson.
It almost seemed like the first time again...we chatted a little bit about about music, how she came to performing, her musical family - and Ms Jacobson even agreed to play "From The Hip".
But, most importantly, for us, she then played us (and, soon, you!) several of her songs.
Debut airing of Episode 71 will be 8/31/21 at 8PM
(and, boy, does it feel good to be back!)

Celebrating the release of their latest album, Carolyn, Jeff, Mark & Michael arrived with way more instruments than people (we like that),including the mountain dulcimer - which has it’s SMM debut right here!
Speaking of “lesser known” instruments…The Cabinet Of Curiosities returns this month

We had Steve Rodgers join us for Episode 63 of Shoreline Music Monthly, and he brought along his talented friends, Suzanne Vick and Spencer Luckey too!
Steve has been such a huge part of the local - and regional - music scene for many years, in many ways, so there was plenty to talk about.
But Steve also has a new album fresh off the press, and he - and his friends - were more than willing to run through a few for us!

For Episode 62 of Shoreline Music Monthly, we are joined by Carol Piro, Steve Fava, and Jeremy Coster, who have been playing together as Indigo Soul for just about three years. Having been the percussion, bass and vocals of a larger project, they weren’t sure how this instrumentation would “stand alone.”
The answer is clearly “Very well!”
We are also visited by Miner Vincent and Jessica Demers from Families Helping Families to pass along “Sweet Beats Music Fest” details!!

Originally from CT, he spent the last decade or so honing his craft in the songwriter/guitarist mecca of Nashville.

Our 50th Episode Live Extravaganza comes to you on April 8th at 7:30PM!!
We may not know exactly what's going to happen....but we do know there will be some

Well, we’ve got some goodies for you!
Podunk Throwbacks (prev only on YT)
And all new - Quinn Miller, Dr Steve, Leaf Jumpers, & honeycreepers!

And then she and Mr Roane filled the station with a few of her original songs.

playing a selection for you all - Magic!)

Julie Harris graced our studio this month for Ep 48 of SMM (and she brought our old friend
Stephen Roane (Ep. 31) in to accompany her!)Poet, novelist…Ms Harris has done it all
- but, of course, we were here to talk about music!
And then she and Mr Roane filled the station with a few of her original songs.
And, we also had Molly Carr and the Solera Quartet in to talk about
Project: Music Heals Us (and don’t worry, we didn’t let then go without
playing a selection for you all - Magic!)

Episode 47 of Shoreline Music Monthly saw Patrick and Kate stopping by the
VSCTV Westbrook Studio. We talked a bit about where they met, (we love open mic meetings
on SMM!), how they blend their different musical backgrounds into
their sound, and how their latest album is coming along.
And then, of course, they played us a few of their wonderful songs!

Creamery Station is in our studio for Shoreline Music Monthly’s 46th episode.
Dylan Kader, Don DeStefano & Jon Truelson, from Creamery Station, stop by to talk a bit. We talk about their recent festival success, the evolution of songs in an improvisational setting….and (I had
to ask..), the story behind the name.
And then, of course, we turned them loose to play a few Creamery tunes - and boy, did they..…

Shoreline Music Monthly episode 45 features local singer/songwriter Del Griffith. We chat a bit about his upcoming album, metal roots, and songwriting in general, and then he plays us a few songs!
On “The Cabinet” we take a look at the Indian (or persian…?) Santur (or Santoor?),
an instrument that is the ancestor of the piano! (but looks nothing like it)

Probably better known as the drummer of Dead By Wednesday, local "Jack of all trades", Opus Lawrence (along with playing in Black Sabbath tribute band Earth, and hosting local trivia nights in pubs about the area) also writes and plays some wonderful acoustic songs.
He was kind enough to stop by, chat a bit, and play us a few before heading out on the latest Dead By Wednesday tour with Raven.

"Texas" Jack Hardesty was in the studio for episode 42.
We learned a bit about his upcoming album, the book he has been working on, and just how he got his Texas Jack moniker (not surprisingly, another SMM alumni was involved!)
Of course, we fit in a round of "From The Hip" too.
We then switched gears and then, with percussionist/drummer Todd Smith (who, we had already put to work running a camera on the interview segment), they ran through a few of Texas Jacks original songs for us.

She is going to be one of the acts playing at Locapalooza lll, coming up on May 20th, so we talk a little bit about that, we discuss some of her recent releases and she is kind enough to play From The Hip (another pro-canoli vote).
Then I get out of the way, and she performs a few of her wonderful original songs for us.

OK - so this one was a little different.
When we have artists in we ask to record a song or two more than we could possibly fit in an episode of Shoreline Music Monthly, just in case there is a problem with one - or more - of the tracks, we will still be able to put together a full episode with top quality tracks.
Now, the fact of the matter is, almost all of the time, all of the tracks come out great. Though most of them end up on Youtube....perhaps not everyone is a "Youtuber". So it seemed a good idea to bundle up some of the ones that didn't make it to air in Season Two in one action packed episode. (And we got to play with the green screen again!)
And in our second go round on this type of feature (see Ep 26 for Season One Bonus Bits!) we actually have a few tracks that have never before aired anywhere!
Artists represented here are: Michael George Daniel Ep 14, Rod Washburn Ep 16, Cosmos Sunshine Ep 18, Erik Simon Vuoritie Ep 20, Shawn Taylor Ep 21, and Someone You Can Xray Ep 25.
And you can follow the links to their full length episodes, if you'd like to see more of these artists!

For Episode 32, we were pleased to have in the studio, a talented singer and songwriter from East Lyme, Ms Katie Perkins. She is currently putting on the finishing touches of her latest album, and performed a bit of it - as well as some earlier material- for us here.
And she did not arrive alone. Her guitar player, Greg Colbath, accompanied Katie on guitar and added some nice harmony vocals.

Well, this was the scene at iCRV Radio on Saturday April 23rd, as the Shoreline Music Monthly gang (Chris, Cobi and Wendy) teamed up with Cody from Dirt Floor, Dave and Ibby (photo credit) from iCRV Radio, and The Greg Sherrod Band(Providence) to make a little collaborative local music history!
The radio broadcast aired live 2PM -3:30 that day, and we will distill it down to the best 30 minutes for your enjoyment as May's episode of Shoreline Music Monthly.
A "Rising Tide, Seat Of The Pants" production!

This crazy shoot was distilled down to wonderful and manageable 30 minute for our May episode! I am hoping this type of thing is something we can do a little more of. Episode 29 provided a fantastic opportunity for working with the fine folks at iCRV Radio and Dirt Floor! Nice job all!

Episode 28 of Shoreline Music Monthly featured a talented young lady named Quinn Miller.
Quinn has been writing music playing about and hosting a weekly open mic for a while now, but she found a little time to stop in, chat a bit, and play a few songs for us. Switching between guitar and ukulele (the first time we've had one in the studio), and armed with that powerful voice of hers, she filled the station with joyous sound!
On The Cabinet Of Curiosities this month, we took a look at the humble jews harp.......who knew something so small could have so many names (at least according to The Phons!)
And in this episode, we were very happy to be able to point out the new "Local Festivals!" tab on this very website to help navigate the upcoming festival season. After all - step one in attending any of these great festivals is being able to find them!
Shoreline Music Monthly is a proud sponsor of the incoming Locapalooza ll May 7th at Three Saints Park in Bethany. More info click here

March 2016
March roared in like a lion, with a visit from a couple of gentlemen from Milford.
Episode 27 featured singer/songwriter (guitar, harmonica) Mark Platt, and percussionist Wayne Kenyon. They played us a wonderful mix of original songs, with quite a wide array of musical instrument for a duo. And, of course, we got to chat a little bit and catch up on their musical history.
Also featured in this month's episode was the time-lapse photography experiment run during the taping of Episode 25. We had Someone You Can Xray in that night, if you remember, and I set a camera on a tripod in the corner and just let it go. 3 hours of taping distilled down to under 3 minutes. Ukelin Numero Dos provides the sound track.

Bryan Ethier, writer for the ShoreLine Times, stopped in at VSCTV studios recently.
We had a little chat about music in general, the local music scene, and, of course, what we are trying to do here at Shoreline Music Monthly.
It just wouldn't have been a proper visit if some of the "less than mainstream" musical instruments from The Cabinet were not represented in the studio! So we chatted a bit about all the ways folks have made music over the years, took a peek at a few of the Curiosities - and even got Bryan jamming on a kazoo!
We'll let you know if and when this story is published.
Update - Link to Bryan's story in the Shoreline Times here:

OK - so this one was a little different.
When we have artists in we ask to record a song or two more than we could possibly fit in an episode of Shoreline Music Monthly, just in case there is a problem with one - or more - of the tracks, we will still be able to put together a full episode with top quality tracks.
Now, the fact of the matter is, almost all of the time, all of the tracks come out great. Though most of them end up on Youtube....perhaps not everyone is a "Youtuber". So it seemed a good idea to bundle up some of the ones that didn't make it to air in Season One in one action packed episode. (And we got to play with the green screen!)
So here we are - tracks from Kristen Graves (ep. 4), The Ebin-Rose Trio (ep. 6), The Meadows Brothers (ep. 7), John Martorelli (ep. 10), Dan Stevens (ep. 11) and Josi Davis (ep. 12).
Sadly, Bob McCarthy (accompanying Dan Stevens) passed away this past year. This show is dedicated to his memory, and all the wonderful music he contributed to the shoreline music scene. He is missed every day.

We opened the new year with a bang!
Episode 25 saw Someone You Can Xray stopping by with one of their various incarnations. We really couldn't fit the 7 piece they often gig as, but with a sense of adventure, we worked in the 4 piece just fine.
Bryan (guitar, vocal) and Dana (Vocals, harp - keyboards stayed home for the taping) Newman, along with Bobby Pickett (a little bit of everything...) and Mike Ryan (all things beatable) they made some glorious noise in the station. Their songs are wonderful, and the musicianship - no matter how many of them there are - is always top notch.
On The Cabinet Of Curiosities we took a look at the Harmonetta - which allowed us to talk harps, accordions, Stevie Wonder, and the Harmonic table.....you'll see.
We also set up a camera taking time lapse photography of the whole evening's chaos - this will turn up in a future episode. Keep your eyes open!

Episode 24 featured the songs of Cathie Smith. Accompanying herself on electric piano Ms Smith played a fine selection of her catalog. If you have not heard this woman sing, do yourself a favor...
Ms Smith was also "brave" enough to play From The Hip, wherein we learned she was born in Hawaii (I learn so many interesting tidbits in this game) among other things.
We also were paid a festive visit by The Connecticut Yuletide Carolers spreading Christmas joy the way they alone can! And they allowed cast and crew to hop up and join in of a rousing version of Jingle Bells to close out the episode.
Just another great example of local Connecticut music!

November 2015
Well, it's that time of year again.....the 12th edition of the Black Friday Concert at The Kete to benefit The Shoreline Soup Kitchen & Pantries!
(now before I get buried in "corrections"....yes, I know not all years were at The Kate...nor were they all on Black Friday. It's what we call artistic license (OK, maybe it's just me that calls it that)
Well, we were pleased to have Matthew Male and Brian Wolfe in to chat a bit and provide all the important information you need to know about this year's event.
And as a bonus, we had two of the acts on this year line up, in the studio to perform! The Ebin-Rose Trio - with Mr Wolfe fresh from interviewee status, and the wonderful Meadows Brothers.

Episode 22 of Shoreline Music Monthly featured the original songs The North End Honeys.
This duo features the rollicking guitar playing and timeless harmonies of Hannah Fair and Erin Cassels-Brown. And some fine songwriting as well.
We find out their stance on cannoli as well, of course…

September 2015
Mr Shawn Taylor paid a visit to the station in September, and , as per our usual M.O., we had a little chat to get to know him, subjected him to the grueling From The Hip shenanigans (would you believe he has hiked in 16 different states?), and then got down to the business of showcasing some of his amazing original songs. With some fine guitar, harmonica, and even whistling as accompaniment the songs came alive in our studio.
The Cabinet Of Curiosities/Community Event Update found us with John Dreslin, Mike Reynolds, and Dave Schancupp from the CT Gilbert & Sullivan Society in the station to school us a little on Gilbert & Sullivan while bringing us the details of this years production of Iolanthe.

August 2015
Erik Simon Vuoritie was our guest for our August episode, and what a fine episode it was!
We had a little time to chat a bit, and of course, the fearless gent was game to take on our From The Hip Q&A segment. Some of the things we find out - always a great time.
But, as always on SMM, it is about the music. And Erik did not disappoint - he performed a couple original compositions, and also wowed us with a piece by some gent named Bach....
On the Cabinet Of Curiosities, we took a look at the kalimba - an ancient instrument African instrument......strangely given it's name by an Englishman in the '50's. And as a special treat ace kalimba player Kevin Spears showcases his impressive skill with the instrument......and shows how an accent instrument can be adapted to todays modern musical technology.

You may remember Tim Foley from our 1st anniversary show - Episode 13 - where he performed the fabulous original composition Underpass Joe. Well, this month he get his own episode, and he does not disappoint.
We talk a bit about song writing, and he tries his hand at "From The Hip", our second go round on our lightning Q&A segment. Curious about his favorite cartoon?.....his stand on cannoli?....well look no further, we've got you covered.
But even more important than that, he brought along a few wonderful songs to play for us.
And that is what we live for here at SMM.
And then, we were fortunate to have in the station with us, Michelle Roise, from the Deep River Junior Ancients to talk to us all about the upcoming Deep River Ancient Muster. She certainly did not come alone....and the DRJAs ripped up a rousing rendition of Yankee Standpiece, a medley arranged themselves.
And, as is my habit, having all those interesting instruments in the studio, we just had to have a little look at them on Cabinet Of Curiosities!

Well, he may live in Brooklyn now, but Mr Cosmos Sunshine was born in raised right here in Haddam CT, so this was a homecoming of sorts. We talked a bit about growing up in the area....and onions (hey, you just never know what will come up on Shoreline Music Monthly!) and then he played us several wonderful original songs.

Kings Of Karma stopped in with their uptempo, harmony driven original music. ( and yes, we had our first drum kit in the station!) The unofficial, official house band of Durham really brought it, and filled the station with amazing music. Official air date 4/21/15 on VSCTV, and available for anytime viewing on Shoreline Music Monthly's Youtube channel. And there is sure to be a bonus track......
On "the Cabinet", we head over to Japan (OK, not really) to feature an interesting instrument called the Taisho Koto.

March 2015
Rodney Washburn is our guest this month, and he brought some fantastic songs to perform. He gets an assist from Jack Adanti (percussion, harmonica) to round out the sound.
This episode will debut 3/24 at 8PM in all the usual places.
We inadvertently continue to feature artists from "The Gris", and Rodney and Jack are the regular entertainment on the Thursdays that last month's guests (The Dizzy River Band) are not performing.....
The "Cabinet" returns to feature the harmonica. The focus is squarely on the 10 hole diatonic (blues harp) harmonica, but we take a peek at a few other types as well.
Info on the upcoming "Beautiful Lengths" hair donation event at ECSU is provided.
It is now, more important than ever to subscribe to our Youtube page to make sure you never miss a thing. As you know, we often have "bonus footage" that doesn't fit in the broadcast episode, but is released later through Youtube!

Rodney Washburn is our guest this month, and he brought some fantastic songs to perform. He gets an assist from Jack Adanti (percussion, harmonica) to round out the sound.

February 2015
Back in the station, and ready to go!
This month The Dizzy river Band stop in to share some of their songs. What a great band - well written songs, great instrumentation.....and those harmonies. What more can one say? They were kind enough to come by with their stripped down "Gris" set. (Catch them there every other Thursday) so that we could fit them,
Make sure you catch this episode!
Another example from the wonderfully diverse original music scene of Connecticut!

In episode 14, we have Michael EarnestSong in the station. He is about to embark on a wonderful adventure, and he fills us in on what his plans are.
He shared with us several of his original songs, and to help out he brought along Chris Lennox to pitch in of background vocals and harmonica.
More original local music from CT. All in all, an episode not to be missed!
And remember:
The station server will no longer be the "go to" place for on-demand viewing of previously aired episodes. Rather, you will want to catch them on our Youtube page.

November 2014
Well, that was quite a party.
We got together a handful of the folks that made J.Martin's open mic a Friday night destination for months, including "ringleader" Frank Nerkowski.
Frank was kind enough to take over introductions in the open mic format we put together, and we were treated to songs by Mark Fornwald, Tim Foley, Cathy Yuhas, Bruce Thorndike, and , of course, Mr Nerkowski himself! - and I got to tweet along a bit on the old harmonica myself .
What a wonderful time.
On Cabinet Of Curiosities, we looked at the tuba.....or should I say "THE TUBAS!!"
Wow - 18 tubas in our little station, and did they make a racket!
And Gary Buttery was here to explain them all....
Now that is how you celebrate an anniversary!
And remember:

It is very hard to believe that a year has come and gone since Shoreline Music Monthly first aired.
It has been an amazing ride - we really do have some amazing talent in our "little pond". I have had the pleasure of talking to old friends, making new friends, and in general having a whole lot of fun doing it!
Special thanks to all the volunteers that keep the wheels on the little red wagon. Jason, Cobi, Wendy, Steve, Jimmy, Colleen, Greg and Felicia - you folks got this off the ground and keep it humming along while I bumble around playing "host" and trying not to get in the way. Best.Crew.Ever.
Special thanks to Chris Morgan and the team at VSCTV for all the encouragement and unending support, helping to turn a vague idea into a viable show that I am very proud of. It certainly would not have been possible without you guys. Such a wonderful space to work in.
Well, tonight is going to be an amazing night at the station - I will let you know a little more about what we have planned for this month's episode in a little bit. For now, I just wanted to take a moment to thank the folks that do the heavy lifting so that we can bring this little slice of local music to a wider audience.

Episode 12 is now loaded on the station server and ready for it's debut airing at 8PM on October 28th.
It seems to me we wound up our first year of broadcasting on a pretty high note when the very talented Josi Davis paid us a visit.
Delightful to talk to, and an amazing musical force, she performed on both keyboards, and guitar, and even played some brand new material from her ever evolving Evolution Of Love cabaret style show for us. You will not want to miss seeing this talented young lady perform!
More fantastic, local original music from Connecticut.
And though the holiday season may seem to be so far in the future - it really isn't, and we had three fine gents stop by - Matthew Male, Leonard Wyeth, and Brian Wolfe - to pass along vital information on the best holiday charity event on the shoreline. The annual Shoreline Soup Kitchen and Pantries benefit concert held every year at The Katharine Herburn Cultural Arts Center (see Mathew, I got it right this time) is coming up and you will not want to miss it!
And remember:

In Episode 11 we made our guest, local bluesman Dan Stevens, work! (orig air date Sept. 30th)
Along with the normal interview segment - such an interesting life - and the original musical selections that he performed for us, accompanied by the rock solid "wizard of the blues" on bass, Mr Bob McCarthy, I was able to convince this nice gent to lend a hand in the Cabinet of Curiosities!
Speaking of which, this month we took a look at the diddley bow - a one string, blues origin instrument.
And not only was Mr Stevens kind enough to fill in some blanks on the history of this interesting instrument, but he was kind enough to perform a number (with Mr McCarthy on diddley bass!) to demonstrate just what the diddley bow is capable of.
SMM bringing you the finest local original music from Connecticut!
We were also very happy to have a visit from Ms Malley O'Shea, from Vista Vocational in Old Saybrook to talk a little bit about the upcoming Tour de Shore cycling ride. This ride is Vista's biggest fund raiser of the year, and this year's entertainment includes SMM alumni Frank Nerkowski.

Episode 10 featured local songwriter John Martorelli. Original air date was Sept. 9th.
You may be familiar with John from UHF or Dr. Jekyll & My Hyde, but we got him one on one for a fantastic episode that gave him the freedom to play all original music.
SMM is your destination for the best in local original music!
On the Cabinet Of Curiosities we looked at the history of the kazoo - and in an amazing coup, were able to persuade the "world famous" Shoreline Music Monthly All-Stars to perform an outré as credits rolled....and strangely, Mr. Martorelli appears to be a member of that band as well!!
In other news - we have migrated all our full episodes to our Youtube channel.

On episode 9 we were very happy to have the one and only Jim Shepley in the studio.
Air date was July 29th, and it was one for the ages.
Jim brought some wonderful songs to share with us, but that was not all, he brought the wonderful Susan Meyers Graham to accompany on slide guitar and his daughter Katie contributed some wonderful harmonies.
Some of Connecticut's finest local acoustic music right here on Shoreline Music Monthly!
We also had a special visit from Justin Vood Good from the Sanctuary in East Haddam. He came bearing information pertaining to the Solar Powered Local Music Tribal Summit that will be posted by the Santuary on Sept. 20th.
The line up is amazing you do not want to miss this event. Just another example of musicians giving back to the community

So far on track for episode 8 to debut 6/24 on VSCTV at 8PM - you will not want to miss this.
I had the distinct pleasure of having one of my oldest and dearest friends in the station as this month's guest.
Mr Greg Sherrod stopped by and performed several of his original songs accompanied only by himself on guitar. For those accustomed to seeing this fellow fronting a "murderer's row" of some of the area's finest musicians blowing up venues on the shoreline (and elsewhere), it is a new look.
His songs were wonderfully honest and heartfelt.
More local, original music with it's roots right here in Connecticut!
Cabinet Of Curiosities returns this month with a look at the autoharp........and of course, the one in "the cabinet" is not your normal run of the mill autoharp.....but the crazed concoction known as the Guitaro.
And in the interest of providing the full spectrum of all things autoharp, a wonderful player, Jo Ann Smith, will demonstrate just how good one of these instruments can sound.....in the right hands.
Our Facebook page will keep you up to date on some of our "alumnus" upcoming shows, charity events featuring local musicians, and SMM programming updates, so.....

Should be just about wrapped up editing the latest episode of Shoreline Music Monthly today.
Air date is scheduled for Tuesday night May 27th at 8PM on VSCTV. Channel 19 for you folks with Comcast, channel 99 on Uverse, or you can choose to watch it streaming off the VSCTV website at VSCTV.com.
The Meadows Brothers, out of Chester, are this months musical guests, and let me just say - these brothers have talent to spare. You will not want to be the one person at the water cooler Wednesday morning that did not see this episode.
More great, local, original music brought to you from the Westbrook studio of VSCTV.
We had a special guest this month as well. Ali Kaufman - you may know her from Morning Mojo on WCNI New London - stopped in with lots of information on the upcoming Mystic Blues Festival next month. Ms Kaufman will be the MC at the festival, and the passion she has for the blues, and this festival in particular, came shining through. The festival has partnered with the Center For Hospice Care (CFHC) Musicians giving back!
More info on these fine folks available at http://www.hospicesect.org

Well, it was a fun time at the station tonight.
The Ebin-Rose Trio was in, and they sounded wonderful.
If all goes according to plan, episode 6 of Shoreline Music Monthly should air on VSCTV on Tuesday April 22nd at 8PM. That is channel 19 for you folks with Comcast, channel 99 on Uverse, or you can choose to watch it streaming off the VSCTV website at VSCTV.com.
Cabinet of Curiosities will feature the steel guitar - which strangely enough, unlike the Hawaiian Tremeloa, DOES have it's origin in Hawaii!
And learn about a cycling fundraiser to benefit the Lyme Land Conservation Trust. A post ride picnic at Ashlawn Farm with music provided by the Eight Mile River Band. Sounds like something you would not want to miss!
Once again, a fine example of local original music right here in Connecticut!

Episode 5 of Shoreline Music Monthly is all polished up, loaded onto the trusty VSCTV server, and ready to go.
It will air for the first time Tuesday night, April 1st, at 8PM on VSCTV. That is channel 19 for you folks with Comcast, channel 99 on Uverse, or you can choose to watch it streaming off the VSCTV website at VSCTV.com.
This month we are very excited to have Mr Brian May showcasing some of his original material. He brought along a couple friends as well to help round out the sound. Ms Wendy Ingram performs on several numbers on pedal steel, and Ms Grace Carver sings lead on the finale.
Mr May brought down some wonderful songs.
Just another great example of local Connecticut original music!
On Cabinet Of Curiosities this month we will take a look at the Hawiian Tremeloa......which, of course, was invented and produced in New Jersey. A true oddball of the musical world.
We will also pass along information on an upcoming Simply Smiles event in Deep River featuring our guest from last month CT state troubadour Kristen Graves.
And we have an advanced calendar alert for the wonderful Beach Jam for Breast Cancer event the Westbrook Elks put on every year so you don't double book that day. An event not to be missed.
